Bringing family to Sweden?
A spouse, registered or cohabiting partner and children under 18 may be eligible to join a higher-education student. Applications can be made together or later.
Family of a student permit
The family must show valid passports, relationship evidence, housing information where required and additional maintenance funds.
Who may qualify
Spouse, registered partner, cohabiting partner and unmarried children under 18.
Maintenance
For 2026, add SEK 4,440 monthly for a partner and SEK 2,664 per child.
Permit length
A family permit normally follows the student’s permit period and passport validity.
Work rights
Adult family members granted residence permits can generally work in Sweden.
Relationship evidence
Provide marriage, cohabitation, birth and consent documents as relevant.
